Rolled Up Pizza Recipe

Rolled Up Pizza Recipe

Some pizza roll up recipes use pizza dough, others use puff pastry and some even use tortillas. However, today I’m going to show you the most delicious method (and arguably the easiest too) which uses a simple slice of bread! Follow me…

If you’re anything like me, you’ve not got the patience to be making pizza dough for pizza roll ups. Sometimes you need pizza roll ups and you need them now. Besides, has bread ever let us down in the past?! These bread roll ups are very similar to my Garlic Bread Roll Ups and Bacon Grilled Cheese Roll Ups, just pizzafied šŸ˜‹ Here’s what you’ll need:

-

Process shots: remove crusts from bread (photo 1), roll flat with rolling pin (photo 2), add pizza sauce and pepperoni (photo 3), add mozzarella and herbs (photo 4), tightly but carefully roll up (photo 5), brush with melted butter (photo 6).

Pan-frying is your best bet when cooking these. I have baked them in the past, but you run the risk of the cheese melting out before they crisp up. They’re also more likely to unravel, which is never fun.

I usually fry in batches, otherwise it gets a bit hectic. You’ll want the heat on low-medium or medium; don’t crank up the heat to speed things up otherwise they’ll burn by the time the centre goes gooey. Start with the seam-side-down then gently rotate as the cheese glues them shut.

Process shots: add roll ups to non-stick pan (photo 1), gently rotate over medium heat until golden and crisp with the cheese just starting to melt out (photo 2).

Pre-shredded packaged mozzarella works best here. Cheddar will also work if you finely grate it. You could also use cheese slices, but only if they’re fairly thin and pliable, otherwise you’ll struggle to roll them up.

Ensure they’re seam-side-down as they rest, and make sure they start off in the pan seam-side-down. Using the right bread will also help, as will using a non-stick pan.

A) Bread - Ensure you're using soft white sandwich bread. Don't use anything firm/fancy because it won't roll up well. Also, try and make sure the bread is as fresh as possible, just to avoid it cracking as you roll it.

B) Pizza Sauce - You can use my Rustic Pizza Sauce if you fancy, I just recommend blitzing it up once it's cooked to smooth out the lumps. You'll find pizza sauce in most stores, but if you can't find any I have used marinara/pasta sauce in the past, which works just fine.

C) How do I stop them from unravelling? - Make sure they're resting seam-side-down as you prep the rest. Also make sure sure they start in the pan seam-side-down, just until the cheese starts melting and binding the roll ups. Another technique is to add the cheese on top of the pepperoni, just so it helps glue the roll ups as it melts. Finally just make sure your pan is non-stick.

D) Serving - These are awesome Finger Food with a Dip (my faves are Garlic and Herb and Sour Cream and Chive).

Meat: Pepperoni is the star of this show, but slices of ham, finely ground cooked sausage, or even leftover meat can be chopped and added to this recipe.

Sauce: Use any jar of marinara sauce with the flavor profile you like best. Add some extra Italian seasoning, garlic powder, or a dash of red pepper flakes for an extra kick!

Cheese: Choose your cheese! This pizza roll-up needs lots of melty cheese to hold the roll together to get those perfect pinwheels! Other cheeses to add are a Mexican blend, cheddar, Monterey jack, or a combination of whatever is in the fridge!

Toppings: Keep the pieces small so the roll stays intact. We like sliced olives, mushrooms, onions, jalapenos, green chiles, bacon bits, and even basil leaves.
