What kind of a pizza are you cooking in this recipe really? Well, pan pizzas usually refer to a medium-thick crust pizza that uses a pizza pan when baking. Its golden crust is fluffy yet crispy due to the oil used to coat the cookware. And it was Pizza Hut, another big pizza restaurant based in America, that first made it popular back in the 1960s. It became such a hit that various other pizza restaurants tried their hand at this dish. And one of the successful ones was Domino’s, who managed to bring something different to this beloved pizza dish. Their take on this classic pizza dish is famous for having a crispy, buttery crust. Loaded with cheese and its toppings spread to the edges, Domino’s Pan pizzas are sheer indulgence.

First, Domino's co-opted the word artisan and soon they will do the same for handmade: starting Monday, Domino's across the country will begin selling Domino's Handmade Pan Pizza. The word handmade is thrown in there to differentiate Domino's pizza dough from Pizza Hut's; according to the USA Today, Some Pizza Huts still use frozen dough to make their pan pizzas. Guess the word fresh isn't as on trend as handmade? Or something?

Making

Anyway, Domino's has had pan pizzas in the past but according to CEO Patrick Doyle they've never gone at it that seriously. Starting Monday, America will finally find out what it looks like when Domino's gets serious about pan pizza. Here's the press release:

Domino's® Introduces Handmade Pan Pizza New pizza offers fresh alternative to industry's use of frozen dough ANN ARBOR, Mich., Sept. 24, 2012 – The recognized world leader in pizza delivery is taking its biggest step since reinventing its hand-tossed pizza nearly three years ago. Domino's Pizza (NYSE:DPZ) today debuts its brand new Handmade Pan Pizza, taking aim at offering the best tasting pan pizza available by giving customers what they have asked for: a crispy golden crust with a great buttery taste – and most importantly, handmade from fresh, never-frozen dough. There is a standard out there for pan pizza that we realized could be better, said Patrick Doyle, Domino's Pizza president and chief executive officer. The reason most people buy a pan pizza is for the crust, and that key component should be fresh, never frozen. But what we think ultimately doesn't matter; I'd encourage customers to taste for themselves. Domino's is making a grand entrance into pan pizza – a category that makes up one in every five pizzas sold in the U.S. today. In addition to launching the product today in all of its nearly 5, 000 stores in the U.S., Domino's will begin a national television campaign on Oct. 1 to promote its Handmade Pan Pizza. The campaign will offer medium two-topping Handmade Pan Pizzas for $7.99 each, giving fans and consumers a value-inspired way to try it and see how it stacks up versus the pan pizza competition. We are proud of the way we have continued to expand and reinvent our menu, and it is safe to say Domino's has not been this excited about a new product since the change to our hand-tossed pizza, said Doyle. Similar to that, the creation of our Handmade Pan Pizza has been driven by customers telling us how we can continue to improve and become the best. The golden crispy crust with a buttery taste is only the beginning of Domino's Handmade Pan Pizza – as it also features two layers of cheese and toppings to the edge. The proof is in the tasting with this one, and we can't wait for our fans and customers to give our new Handmade Pan Pizza a try, said Doyle.

The girls are taking over New York City and now Los Angeles, too. Here’s where to eat if you want to follow along.Domino's new Handmade Pan Pizza is a bold move into Pizza Hut territory and features fresh dough hand-pressed into a pizza pan before baking. There's not much crust to hold on to as the toppings are sprinkled right to the edge of the pizza.

Domino's

I picked up a 12 medium pan pizza with bacon and sausage from my local Domino's for $7.99 with a online coupon(without any coupons/discounts, it's $10.99 for a 1-topping pan pizza). There are currently no large or small options for the pan pizza, only medium.

Hand Tossed Vs. Pan Pizza: What's The Difference?

The pizza comes in an eye-catching, glossy black box. Like the rest of Domino's boxes, it's adorned with words touting the virtues of its contents.

Domino's pan pizza is thicker than their hand-tossed crust and tapers at the edge like a flying saucer. The crust exhibited a fine crispy layer over the crumb, but without the bubbly, fried, oiliness of Pizza Hut's version. There's a line of crunchiness that runs the very edge of the pizza.Like a lot of pizzas and breads, the crust does soften quite a bit as it cools. There's not a lot of flavor to the crust alone, but there is a slight butteriness.

Inside, the crumb had a moist, just slightly chewy quality similar to mochi or rice flour. There's a slight buttery flavor to it, but there's no butter involved if you're wondering.

The pizza might be covered with two layers of cheese, but I didn't really note anymore cheese beyond what is typical for Domino's.

Domino's bacon might be my favorite among the fast food chains. It crisped up quite nicely in the pizza oven and yields a very tasty flavor and smokiness that I always enjoy. It is much better than the tiny bits they used back when I was a kid. The sausage wasn't anything special, but was tender and a decent seasoned flavor. The combination of the two is a bit salty and I regretted not going with a meat/veggie duo, but only a little.

Domino's

Is it better than Pizza Hut? Well, that depends on your preferences. I'm not a huge fan of Pizza Hut's pan so it's an unequivocal 'yes' for me. I like it better because it's nowhere near as oily as Pizza Hut and the crumb is moist whereas Pizza Hut's pan pizza tends to be drier. I enjoyed the soft crumb and thin layer of crispness. In fact, I like the new pan crust better than Domino's recently revamped hand-tossed pizza crust. Overall, Domino's Handmade Pan Pizza is a winner in my book.
