We love anything crispy or anything salmon. And this spicy salmon sushi pizza has both! Talk about a two-in-one package. The fried rice patty base is crispy on the outside, and soft and fluffy on the inside. The spicy salmon topping is just bursting with amazing textures and flavours. It's a dish that basically anyone will like!

Easy

We like to serve this as an appetizer, especially for special events or dinner parties. Such a great bite-sized food to pair with wine in a social setting. Or you can just eat it as a side or as a whole meal if you want!

Spicy Salmon Sushi Pizza

Sushi pizza is actually a Canadian dish (YAY Canada!) that is a fusion of pizza with sushi! The base is usually a circular-shaped crispy fried rice patty as the pizza crust and is often topped with salmon, crab meat, tuna, avocado or a combination of these ingredients. The topping is often seasoned with mayonnaise or Japanese mayonnaise (Kewpie) and other Asian-oriented seasonings. It is an extremely popular dish in Canada, and every sushi restaurant in Montreal where we live has sushi pizza in their menu.

Most of the ingredients you'll need to make this dish is pretty simple and relatively easy to get. Some of them are even pantry staples!

Though it looks fancy and more like a restaurant dish than homemade, it's actually quite easy to make! You only need to know a few tips and tricks to make the fried rice patty, but other than that the topping is basically chopping and mixing!

You can buy Panko breadcrumbs in Asian supermarkets. Most if not all Japanese, Korean, and Chinese supermarkets carry Panko. In North America, many regular supermarkets now also carry Panko breadcrumbs.

It is a mayonnaise made with only the yolks of eggs and with apple cider vinegar or rice vinegar. This makes it more rich and fatty, and has some acidic notes compared to regular mayonnaise.

This may be one of the simplest, but messiest meals I’ve created in the last month. If you are comfortable deep frying on your stove top, THIS is the recipe for you. If you aren’t, give it a shot anyway.

Next, sashimi. Note: Please (please please please) ensure you follow all Health Canada, FDA, [whatever country you are from] guidelines on fish. Through my research (mixed with anecdotal evidence from friends) – which blew my mind – I discovered there is no overarching, universal standard or process for “sushi grade” fish. (Generally, sushi-grade has to do with flash-freezing (-40-80°C) for [some period of time] in order to kill any parasites that like to hang around).

A good rule of thumb is that if it doesn’t say “sushi grade”, it probably isn’t. Ask your local fish supplier (or supermarket/Asian store) to ensure what you are about to eat raw is safe to do so. In the photos here, I used salmon (sake), but knock yourself out with tuna (maguro), imitation crab (pollock), or whatever fish (or not-fish) your heart desires. Chop that up into 1cm cubes and you’ll be in business.

TRY THIS: For some added kick, toss it in some mayo and sriracha and/or ginger and/or green onion in order to make it SPICY.

Once your rice is done, if you have the luxury, let it cool a little (if not, you’d just better have touch skin!). You’ll need 3 bowls – one for flour, one for beaten egg and last, for panko powder. In order, you’ll take your rice ball/patty through the bowls, first covering with flour, coating with egg and rolling it in panko. From here, the patty goes into the deep-fryer/oil.

When Pizza Met Sushi

You’ll need to use a little discretion here, especially if you’re not using a proper deep fryer with constant heat and temperature monitoring. By the end, mine took about 10-12 min at medium heat on stovetop, while cooking three rice cakes at a time.

This was one of the more creative recipes I’ve tried and couldn’t find my literature on how to do it… so trial by fire (but luckily no real fire!) I sincerely hope you give it a try – even if you butcher it, it will taste super good (and you can always just eat it in a bowl, like a magical deep fried poke).

This easy delicious sushi pizza recipe has tons of room for improvisation and as always, if you can dream it, you can make it; if you can make it, you can make it pretty.

Japanese

It’s an easy, less fiddly, recipe than traditionally hand-rolled sushi. In fact, it’s a great way to make sushi for a crowd. Grab a few classic sushi ingredients like sushi rice, nori seaweed sheets, and salmon. Each bite is packed with rich umami (thanks to the nori sheets!) and great texture from the crispy sushi rice.

When The Japanese Take Over Pizza

Make this sushi pizza at your next gathering, and your guests will come back for more! Serve with your favorite sushi garnishes like wasabi and soy sauce and enjoy!

Sushi pizza is not Japanese but rather a Japanese-inspired dish coming all the way from Canada. It was invented by Kaoru Ohsada, a Japanese Seafood Restaurant chef.

The sushi is made in the form of a big sheet with crispy, slightly chewy sushi rice and topped with avocado, salmon, and cucumber. It’s served in slices which resembles pizza.

Salmon (or Other Fish Like Tuna): we used smoked salmon, but if you prefer to eat them raw, make sure you purchase one that is sashimi grade. Alternatively, you can use grilled, or canned salmon and tuna.

Cucumber: Cucumber goes so well with sushi because it’s refreshing and also adds a pleasant crunch. We used small baby cucumbers for this recipe.

Dishing

To make your own sushi rice, start with rinsing. Rinse the rice until it runs clean, then add it together with the water in a medium-sized saucepan.

Start by slicing all your toppings thinly and set them aside. Brush the narrow side of the nori sheet with water. Place another sheet on top and press with fingers to stick them together.

Spread the cooked sushi rice on top. Add the cucumber, avocado, and fish on one side and roll like a regular sushi roll. Cover “pizza crust” with sliced salmon, decorate with cucumbers, avocado and scallions. Serve with soy sauce.

Serve the sushi pizza with typical sushi add-ons. Sprinkle it with toasted sesame seeds, soy sauce, wasabi, pickled gingers, or Japanese (Kewpie) mayonnaise.

Tuna Sushi Pizza

Brush one (a bit narrower) side of the nori sheet with water. Place another sheet on top and press with fingers to stick them together.

To make “pizza crust rim” place thinly sliced cucumber, avocado and fish on one side and roll like a regular sushi roll.
