This epic basil pizza is all about one thing: BASIL. It’s got a thick layer of savory pesto, and is topped with loads of fresh leaves!
Are you basil obsessed? There’s nothing better than the peppery fresh flavor of this bright green herb. So get ready to take everything that’s incredible about basil and eat it as a pizza topping. That’s right: Everything Basil Pizza! (Get it? Sounds a lot like…this!) That means garlicky, thick homemade basil pesto slathered onto perfect pizza dough, topped with gooey mozzarella and a huge handful of fresh basil leaves. It’s the brightest green, tastiest basil pizza you’ll ever make.

The first step to basil pizza is making basil pesto! If it’s summer and you’ve got a big bushy plant of basil, pesto is the place to use it. Of course if it’s not the season for basil, you can use purchased basil pesto or store-bought fresh basil leaves.
Naked Pizza With Basil & Garlic
Our favorite pesto our Classic Basil Pesto: it’s garlicky, bright green, and everything a classic pesto should be! The recipe calls for 2 cups of basil leaves. If you don’t have that much, you can get away with making a half recipe. It’s especially helpful to have a small blender or immersion blender for a half recipe, since the quantities will be smaller! Here are the main steps for how to make pesto:
There are so many different variations on basil pesto! Our Basil Cashew Pesto features cashews, which are easier to find and cheaper than pinenuts. It’s a similar story for our Basil Walnut Pesto, which is just as good. We also have a Vegan Pesto (though if you’re making a pizza we assume you’re okay with eating cheese!). No matter which variation you make, it’s seriously easy to make pesto!
The other major step in this basil pizza is making pizza dough! To shortcut the time required, you can also use store-bought dough. But for the very best basil pizza, our homemade pizza dough is a must. It’s the perfect texture: fluffy and chewy on the inside, and crispy on the outside. Here are a few things to keep in mind with pizza dough:
Classic Margherita Pizza Recipe
Once you’ve got your basil pesto and pizza dough, this basil pizza is a breeze. Simply spread a layer of pesto onto the crust, and mozzarella and Parmesan cheese on the top. We added a sprinkle of dried basil for good measure, but it’s not necessary for flavor.
Baking it. Baking a pizza with basil leaves on top makes them turn a sad shade of black. Yes, don’t even think about baking those delicate leaves! You can see in the photo above that some of the basil is already getting a little black in spots because of the heat of the pizza.
Cheaper and easier than buying it from the store. You don’t even need garden space to do it: just a sunny ledge! Here are a few tips on how to grow basil at home, and how to store it!This margherita pizza recipe is a celebration of simple, fresh ingredients! Juicy tomatoes, basil, and mozzarella cheese top a crisp, chewy crust.
Cheese White Pizza With Spinach And Basil
I think of margherita pizza as the heartier cousin of Caprese salad, with a crisp, chewy crust supporting the delicious trio of tomatoes, basil, and fresh mozzarella. You’ll find this classic pizza on the menu of any Neapolitan pizza joint, but you can also make a really great homemade version. This margherita pizza recipe is here to prove it!

According to Marcella Hazan’s cookbook Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking, the pizza was first made for Italy’s Queen Margherita when she visited Naples in the late nineteenth century. The red, white, and green toppings were patriotic, as they decorated the pizza with the colors of the Italian flag.
Next, stretch the dough. Don’t worry if you don’t have any fancy pizza-making equipment like a pizza peel or pizza stone. A baking sheet works perfectly for this recipe!

…and bake! Transfer the pizza to a 500°F oven and bake for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and the crust is golden brown.
Sweet And Spicy Tomato Basil Pepperoni Pizza.
Remove the pizza from the oven and top it with the fresh basil leaves, red pepper flakes, and a drizzle of olive oil.
My favorite way to serve a margherita pizza is with a salad on the side. It goes nicely with any of these recipes:
This homemade margherita pizza is so easy and delicious! My biggest tip for this recipe is to use good-quality ingredients like fresh basil and sauce made with San Marzano tomatoes. Because the recipe is so simple, you'll really taste the difference.
